Have you ever gone into a restaurant and asked for a table for one?
Before I got to Boston, I never went to dinner by myself.
On the night of my arrival, I sat at a Thai food place in Somerville looking at the empty chair across from me. It was the most empowering thing I’ve experienced! (Is that sad?)
I’m not sure why, but that empty chair was a sign – I actually made it.
I was (and still am) about 1,800 miles away from home.. alone!
So, I’m subletting an apartment in Somerville for a full month with a host (she’s really cool) I found on AirBNB. It has allowed me to come here with only three pieces of luggage. This is probably the craziest thing I’ve ever done and I constantly have to pinch myself every time I walk along the neighborhood of beautiful colonial-style houses and neighborhoods.
Speaking of walking, I can’t get over how slowly I walk compared to everyone around me. I blame my short legs. Luckily I know I’m in for a good work out every time I decide to head to the city or to the next T Stop. Thank God for subways! A Charlie Card Link Pass is about $70 per month for unlimited travel on subway and buses. I spent about the same amount per week when I had to commute from Fort Worth to Dallas! However, that’s probably one of the only inexpensive comparisons I’ve found thus far.. but I’ll take it!
I have my first interview tomorrow with a recruiter who specializes in my field, so we will see how that goes. I would love to finally be a contributing member to society. Until then, I’ll be wandering the city, spending time with my host’s cat and taking some free online courses to keep my brain occupied.
Wish me luck! By the way, I love encouraging comments from my small list of readers. 😉
